In a recent video workshop we ran with children, we requested a show of hands for who wanted to be the camera operator. Almost every hand shot up and fluttered in the air, with frenzied calls of "Me!!" and "Please!!".
Minutes later, we ask who would like to be the sound operator. Quite a different reaction. The muted, almost anxious expressions, gave the impression that a trick question had been posed and no-one was keen to be seen willingly picking what must surely be a short straw.
But sound is as good as a picture. And many times, it's better. Technically it's more important, because good sound will lead you through bad picture, where the reverse is not the case. And editorially, sound is used to brilliant effect in ways too many to mention.
This video is a great example of why we should always put a hand up for sound.
