A video thumbnail is your video pack shot. The same thought, time and effort that goes into your product pack shots should go into the generation of your video thumbnail. It's the key thing that will make someone click, and hopefully then watch. But if the thumbnail isn't right, they'll never click, never mind watch.
Choose a thumbnail that tells the story of your video without words. If your video is an instructional, show a nice image of the product to be made, with an onscreen text instruction. If the video is thought leadership, show the face of the speaker in the thumbnail, with just a few words of text to summarise the topic.
Your thumbnails must be consistent across episodic content. Your playlist should look visually attractive, coherent and related. Think of your playlist as a content catalogue, and populate it with quality pack shots.
